This conversation was wonderful. I love both these writers so much. It's so hard sometimes to feel like I'm not "running out of time." Raising babies, working for a wage, writing in the margins of my daily life. Every year that goes by, aging out of another "25 under 25" or "30 under 30" list, wondering when I'm going to finally get it together and make it happen. What Virginia shared about her publishing journey was so powerful to hear. Maybe I'll make it happen at 40 or 45 or 50 and still have ooodles of years left to explore all my characters and book ideas. Loved this one.
Over ten years I've made three major revisions to my novel. A tertiary character that I loved is now the protagonist and the original protagonist was demoted. Another secondary character became the antagonist and the original bad guy was deleted completely. Rightly or wrongly I never stopped loving the book. About to query so we'll see.
This is great! I would think the fact that you were willing to make such big changes for the sake of the book kept it feeling alive for you. Good luck with querying!
